{Mei-ling Hom had her upbringing in the city of New Haven, Connecticut. She is the daughter of a Chinese immigrant father and an American born Chinese mother.} {Her} qualifications include {a M.F.A degree, which she received from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University.} {She} presently works as {an Associate Professor of Art at the Community College of Philadelphia.} {She} was born in {Shanghai and has a graduation degree from the Fine Art Department of the Shanghai Academy of Drama.} {Jian-Jun Zhang came to America in the year 1987 and was an artist in residence, until finally returning to USA to stay in the year 1989.}
The work of {Zhang is based upon the concept of being able to create a line of work which consists of six diptychs- one part of will consist of a photograph and the other part a painting. She will also include a triptych of photo process work} in the exhibition. {The former group of work will consist of photographs taken of architectural structures in both New York and China, placed right next to paintings of architectural structures from the past and the future. In the Manhattan project the main focus is to present pictures of buildings that have silhouetted shapes of other buildings which were once adjoining. Beside each of these photos is the watercolored picture of a construction that is lost in time with a looming portrayal of a futuristic design. Zhang had found a Chinese village near Shanghai, whose dwelling farmers had grown rich enough to construct buildings which were several stories in height. These buildings had fanciful palatial appearances and have been created using a combination of Chinese columns and decorative balustrades with the more flat surfaces that are inherent of recent Euro-American architecture. Besides these photographs are the oil paintings of Jun-Jian depicting the previous humble dwellings that were inhabited by the once poor farmers.}
{Hom’s work is based on the mutable societal and nature images and their interpretations. She has been preoccupied with “cultural clouds” that illuminate these spheres. She has previously studied the various views of clouds that have been included in the Chinese interpretation of fortune and happiness as well as their inclusion and interpretation in both western and eastern mythology as statuses of renewal and their importance as indicators of weather patterns.} In {her} words, {“How clouds are conceived, be it allegorically or scientifically, reflects the templates- including beliefs and mores of particular civilizations.” Hom’s} work is going to bring forth in this exhibition {her depictions of clouds in varied mediums such as paper, rubber, felt, ceramic and wire. These 2D and #D depictions of clouds made by her are going to be hung from the ceiling or will find themselves perched on walls with the help of pedestals.}
